Energy and financing glossary

Short, practical explanations of terms used when designing, financing and assessing energy systems.

Technology

CHP

Cogeneration

The simultaneous production of electricity and useful heat in one process. Viability depends on whether the facility can use both outputs at the right times.

#
Technology

CCHP

Trigeneration

Cogeneration extended with cooling, usually through an absorption chiller powered by part of the recovered heat. The same heat cannot be counted both as useful heat and as cooling input.

#
Technology

BESS

Battery energy storage system

A system combining batteries, power conversion, protection and controls. It shifts energy in time; it does not generate energy by itself.

#
Financing

EaaS

Energy as a Service

A model in which the customer uses an energy system or outcome under a contract. Financing, ownership, operation and settlement may be shared among different parties; EaaS does not always mean zero customer CAPEX.

#
Financing

CAPEX

Capital expenditure

Spending needed to design, purchase, build and commission an installation. CAPEX should cover the complete implementation, not only the main unit.

#
Financing

OPEX

Operating expenditure

Ongoing system costs such as fuel, service, auxiliary energy, consumables and fees. They should be assessed over the operating life.

#
Financing

ROI

Return on investment

The relationship between financial benefit and capital employed. The result depends on methodology, period, taxes and financing and is not the same as simple payback.

#
Financing

SPBT

Simple payback time

An indicative period until cumulative net savings equal the investment. It normally ignores the time value of money and does not replace a full financial analysis.

#
Data and operation

Self-consumption

Using energy on site

The share of energy produced at a facility and consumed there immediately. High self-consumption may reduce grid purchases, but it does not guarantee viability on its own.

#
Data and operation

Load profile

Energy demand over time

Demand measured in consecutive intervals, such as every 15 minutes or hour. An annual total does not show peaks or whether power, heat and cooling demand overlap.

#
Data and operation

kW, kWe, kWt, kWh and MWh

Power versus energy

kW describes instantaneous power, while kWh or MWh describes energy used or produced over time. kWe denotes electrical power and kWt thermal power.

#
Technology

EMS

Energy management system

A supervisory system that gathers data and controls sources, storage and loads according to a defined objective. It can cooperate with BMS and SCADA but is not the same thing.

#
Technology

Absorption chiller

Cooling from heat

Equipment that uses thermal energy to produce chilled water or cooling. It also needs auxiliary electricity and effective heat rejection.

#
Technology

Peak source

Extra capacity for peaks

A source used when demand exceeds the base unit’s capacity or when the base system is unavailable. It may be a boiler or the electricity grid.

#
Technology

H₂-ready

Ready for a hydrogen blend

Readiness to operate under specified conditions with a hydrogen-containing fuel. For ASV 14–40, confirmation covers natural gas with up to 20% H₂ by volume/molar share, not pure hydrogen.

#
Data and operation

Peak shaving

Reducing power peaks

Reducing the highest power demand through load control, storage or local generation. The financial effect depends on the tariff and capacity charging method.

#
Technology

LPG

Liquefied gas and technical propane

Fuel stored in liquid form. It can supply a suitable unit version when composition and parameters meet manufacturer and project requirements.

#
Technology

Biogas and sewage gas

Gas fuels from biological processes

Gases produced from organic matter or wastewater treatment. Their composition can vary, so fuel quality, treatment and the correct unit version must be assessed.
